rodger insh

Born in Kirkcaldy and now based in Montrose Rodger graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee in 1971. Although his roots are from the east coast, it is the rugged west coast which inspired the landscapes in this exhibition. It was on family camping holidays in the 1950s and 1960s, where Rodger became aware of Scotland’s mountainous character. “The mountains which have come to mean most to me are those free standing sentinels of Assynt and further north. Their stark character personifies permanence and a struggle against the relentless onslaught of time and the elements.” Rodger works with gouache, giving the solidity, density and subtlety which he strives for. Some have described his painting style as uncompromising but he is determined to respect the subject and give it enough time to refine and distil what are the essential elements. As well as several one man shows over the years he has exhibited and sold at the RSA, RSW and Aberdeen Art Society exhibitions.
