"I respond to rural, urban and industrial landscape; to buildings; and to people (though not children!) All of these I have attempted to record in one way or another. For this I employ a wide range of media, both singly and in combination: it all depends on the subject and how I feel about it. But whichever medium I choose there are two constant pre-occupations , the first being drawing: whether I am working on a large painting or a small print, drawing is always the start. Secondly I am preoccupied by actual mark-making - the nature and quality of the marks I make on paper or on canvas as I respond to my subject. Other things matter too, of course, though these vary according to the subject: in the rural landscape the mood, the light and the colour; in the figure its structure and line; and in urban and industrial contexts I may be concerned more with detail, movement or texture; but all of these are interchangeable or even dispensable..."
