Ise Stumpff
Ise Stumpff (1957-2024) was a Lochaber based artist who designed and made stained and painted glass panels using traditional and medieval techniques. She began working with stained glass in 1977, soon developing great skill as a maker/artist, teacher and restorer/ conservator. From 1991 until 2016 she was employed at the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, where she worked on the conservation of their medieval stained-glass collection. Many of the panels she worked on can be seen on display in the recently reopened museum.
Born in Göttingen, Germany, her love for Scotland was sparked through frequent visits to stay with her aunt, who lived on the west coast. Eventually, she would come to make the Highlands her home, moving to a small hamlet on the edge of Loch Eil. This would be a place that she would come to regard as her spiritual home and from where she would draw much of the inspiration for her work. Fascinated by the textures and colours of the plants and wildlife, she challenged herself to translate these into stained and painted glass. Her work was admired by all who visited the gallery, and we feel very privileged to have been able to show Ise’s beautiful work.
