marion macrae

Marion Macrae was born in 1962 and has lived in Argyll for most of her life. She is a self-taught needle woman, crocheting since childhood and taking up petit point tapestry in her 20s, when she began creating her own designs. Until recently, her crochet work has been largely practical in purpose. However, her handiwork has always been carried out with painstaking precision and detail, no matter the application. Her current work explores a love of nature combined with fine crochet work. Firstly, leaves are collected from her garden then preserved and pressed before they are crocheted using fine cotton thread and a small crochet hook, which requires incredible precision. The process of combining the two materials is highly skilled and, given the fragility of the leaves and the propensity for the cotton to twist, hours of concentration is required for each leaf.
