andrew sinclair | new work
Drawing inspiration from the people and places near his home in Resipole, Andrew has created a stunning new body of work. Using his characteristic rich colour palette and striking compositions, he has created intimate windows into the lives of musicians, landscapes, and those depicted in portraits, allowing the viewer to experience the drama and emotion of each scene.
Beinn Resipol is a recurring motif within Andrew’s paintings. The mountain’s formidable presence looming large over the artist’s home for most of his life. Two notable examples here were captured during the cooler months, distinguished by low-angled sunlight and elongated shadows.
The painting Illuminate features two fiddlers - a mother and daughter - who engage in an unspoken dialogue through their music. This musical interaction lends a sense of illumination to the surrounding room.
Fingerpickin, How to Hold the Fiddle, and Solo depict subjects entirely engrossed in their own musical creation, offering the viewer a detached perspective. Whereas, conversely, the paintings Hold, Notice, and Jim are composed with the sitter’s direct engagement with the viewer.
Andrew’s distinctive painterly style - characterised by his use of colour, tone, texture, and strong contrasts - serves as a unifying element for this entire collection. The artist’s profound passion for the medium is apparent, and the warmth emanating from his work is enriching.
