This exhibition showcases the innovative and diverse approaches to batik by members of the Batik Guild of the UK. As an ancient textile art, batik has been practiced for millennia, with evidence of the art form found in regions such as the Far East and India. However, this exhibition demonstrates how batik continues to evolve and thrive in contemporary practice.

Batik involves applying a wax resist to cloth, which prevents the dye from penetrating certain areas. This technique allows for intricate patterns and vibrant colours. The wax can be applied using a canting, a spouted tool, or a cap, a copper stamp. After dyeing, the wax is removed with boiling water, revealing the desired design.

While Indonesia, particularly the island of Java, is renowned for its mastery of batik, this exhibition highlights the unique perspectives and styles of British batik artists.
