David Greenall
Born and raised in Merseyside, David Greenall's early life was shaped by manual labor in the fishing and building industries. In his late twenties, he embarked on a formal artistic journey, beginning with a foundation course at Norwich School of Art and culminating in a BA Honours Degree in Fine Art Printmaking from Winchester School of Art.
In 1991, Greenall and his wife, the painter Ruth O’Dell, relocated to the Isle of Lewis, where they have lived ever since. This island setting has deeply influenced his work, providing a rich source of inspiration and a unique palette of light and colour.
Greenall's paintings and drawings are characterised by a profound understanding of light and its ability to transform the natural world. He meticulously mixes his own colours from raw pigments, blending mediums like wax, resin, oil, and egg tempera to create works of exceptional vibrancy and depth. His unerring draughtsmanship lends a sense of precision and control to his compositions.
In 2023, Greenall's artistic achievements were recognised when he won the Highland Art Prize, a testament to his talent and dedication to his craft.
