James B Munro (1925 -1990) was a Scottish artist and jazz musician who was known for his diverse creative output.

Throughout his career, he explored themes of memory, time, and nature through a diverse practice encompassing printmaking, painting, and sculpture, all infused with a distinctive poetic sensibility.

Music played a huge role in Munro’s life, in particular jazz, and he was an accomplished keyboard and vibraphone player. Many of his works were inspired by the post-World War II jazz movement and the freedom of expression which accompanied it. Even the highly polished brass and stainless-steel instruments he encountered had a direct influence on his work, as did the shadows cast on stage while performing with his fellow musicians.

Munro’s works can be found on permanent display in public collections including the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh’s City Gallery.
