John Smyth is a Glasgow based artist who was born and raised in Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Graduating from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen in 2000, he has gone on to have a successful career as both an artist and an arts educator. He is best known for his figurative works which juxtapose a naturalistic rendering of the human form with more abstract elements. Using textured paint, metal patina and patterns, John seeks to create paintings that have an appealing modern aesthetic, whilst creating balance on both a visual and conceptual level. Although his landscape works at first appear to be more traditional in style, on closer look, they too employ subtle abstraction through sculptural techniques, giving a fresh perspective to the long held  romanticisation of the Scottish Highlands.
