Lucy Gray
black swan (Breaking the Black Dog)
mixed media

Black Swan. Also known as breaking the black dog (black dog being a Scottish term for a depressive state). The sculpture is an expression of triumph over adversity. The initial inspiration for the work is the piece of wood forming in the neck. This is a piece of charred wood found on the shore of Loch Etive. I have stabilised this before use. The sculpture is a combination of found organic matter, reinforced cardboard and gesso mixed with pigments. The bill is finished in water gilded burnished and distressed copper leaf. The base is cast Jesmonite finished in acrylic.
