The artist richard head
richard head

A natural born artist, Richard Head has been drawing since the age of four. From school, he went to Bristol Polytechnic where he won a David Murray Studentship to the Royal Academy schools. Introductions to John Piper, John Butterworth and Keith Grant led to the refining and simplifying of his palette, enabling him to concentrate on the subject and render it in a variety of different media. Richard always works on location; an initial drawing in pencil is subsequently developed with a steel nib, then tone washes may be applied with extensive use of blotting paper, a toothbrush being used to add texture. In the artist’s own words, “I use colour subjectively. I aim to be true to nature, to try and create the atmosphere of the place… to capture the colour of the scene.” Richard lives in Surrey but regularly visits the west coast of Scotland to paint.
