richard strachan

Richard Strachan graduated from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen in 2001, and went on to teach at the Edinburgh College of Art. His work is inspired by interior spaces and the interplay of perspective planes, as well as the light and colour within them. Motivation comes from experiences of the built environment, and of patterns and shapes within this. Over many years, he has developed a painterly, geometric language to convey the weight and proportionality of architectural spaces, using the emotive, illusory and travelling qualities of colour. Hard-edged, constructed elements in his compositions compete with nebulous colour forms, realised through glazes of pigment-infused gloss paint. Strachan was awarded the Aspect Prize in 2006, as well as prizes from the Scottish Society of Artists, and is a professional member of the Paisley Arts Institute.
