Stephen Redpath

Stephen Redpath is an Aberdeenshire-based artist who grew up in West Wales, where he developed a deep affinity for the natural world. After thirty years studying and researching wildlife and landscapes as an ecologist, he turned to painting full time in 2019. His evocative landscapes are created using watercolour—a medium he prefers for its ‘luminosity, immediacy, and unpredictability.’ Building on direct observations in the field, his paintings develop through memories, feelings, and an emotional response to the environment. Drawing extensively on the experiences gained from working in a variety of landscapes, his work occupies the liminal space between representation and abstraction. Revelling in the opportunity to play and explore with paint, Stephen seeks those exhilarating moments where observation, emotion, and mark-making become interwoven. Working on a large, gimballed table allows him to manipulate paint on the surface in innovative ways, allowing large washes of colour and offering true freedom of expression.
