james b munro | TRIO
Resipole Studios is thrilled to present TRIO, an exhibition of three works by the late artist and jazz musician James B Munro (1925-1990). Marking the centenary of the artist’s birth, this show forms part of a wider series of exhibitions taking place throughout Scotland this year.
Known for his diverse creative output, the exhibition offers a poignant insight into Munro's practice, presenting one striking print, one evocative painting, and one compelling sculpture from his artistic legacy. Throughout his career, he explored themes of memory, time, and nature through a diverse practice encompassing printmaking, painting, and sculpture, all infused with a distinctive poetic sensibility.
Music played a huge role in Munro’s life, in particular jazz, and he was an accomplished keyboard and vibraphone player. Many of his works were inspired by the post-World War II jazz movement and the freedom of expression which accompanied it. Even the highly polished brass and stainless-steel instruments he encountered had a direct influence on his work, as did the shadows cast on stage while performing with his fellow musicians.
Munro’s works can be found on permanent display in public collections including the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh’s City Gallery.
